How to Repair a Cracked Windshield & Rock Chip

How-To Quickly & Easily Repair A Windshield & Big Rock Chip With 2 Long Cracks (DIY)
- Inspect & Clean Damaged Area
Inspect damage area, scrape with razor blade if necessary, free loose glass and wipe down with paper towel. Check damaged area for moister. Remember the damage has to be completely dry!
- Drilling and Cone Creation
Consequently drilling is fun. Drill half way through first layer of glass. In addition don’t drill to the liner. The drill holes are for cone creations in specific areas. For this step you’ll need a drill with a tiny carbide bit, sowing needle and striker bar. Drill holes at ends of cracks and in center of rock chip. Insert needle in holes and tap it until you’ve crated cones.
- Chip Preparation & Using Pit Filler
Preparation to repair the chip later. Place pit resin over the cracks around to the chip. Quickly, apply tape over pit filler, dries fast. The rock chip is separated from the cracks. Ultimately to vacuum and pressurize the chip later, this must be done now.
- Filling 1st Crack
In short for this step your going to need tape, repair pump, resin and crack expander tool. Use vacuum and pressure cycles at the drill hole of first crack to get the resin flowing. Then apply pressure to the inner glass with a crack expander rod. This opens the crack, now follow the crack with pump and crack expander completely filling crack. Carefully place tape over the crack. Let the sun’s UV freely set the resin.
- Fill Second Crack
Subsequently filling the 2nd crack the same manner as the 1st crack. Tape up the line and wait for the windshield repair resin to fully cure.
- Mounting Bridge Pump, Vacuum, Pressurize Chip & Fill Cracks
Spray Windex on suction cup and mount the bridge. Position pump just over the hole drilled into chip earlier. Cycle the pump using vacuum and pressure to replace air with resin. Leave pump under pressure, with probe apply pressure to any remaining cracks. Working each and ever crack until there completely full of resin.
- Curing The Glass Resin & Bridge Removal
With pump under pressure let resin cure. Afterward resin hardens around the pump area remove bridge and tape up pit area. Let resin fully cure once more.
- Scrape Tape, Excess Resin & Clean Auto Glass
Completely remove the clear scotch tape from the chip and both of the cracks. Use a razor blade and glass cleaner to scrape all excess glue and tape from the glass. Spray Windex and clean windshield with paper towels.
Specifically About Repairing Cracks
A hairline crack is between the first layer of the windshield. Acrylic resin is injected. The resin hardens to the molecules of the glass. This bonds the crack back together. In addition, this in turn stops the spreading of the crack and looks better.
Basically cracks get dirty quick this affects functionality and durability. However scotch tape to cover the damage area will keep dirt and chemicals out. The sooner you do it, the better it will look and the stronger it will be. A fairly new chip 1-3 weeks old and hasn’t cracked completely out yet or grown longer than 20 inches. The crack is definitely fixable and the repair will absolutely look a lot better.
For example, crack is bigger than a foot or older than a month. At any rate, you will indeed have dirt with other contaminates in the crack. Most importantly, there’s the width of the crack it self. Older cracks show more after the repair process, mainly due to dust. If the crack is real old and dirty a repair is not going to look as good or be as strong.

Free Advice to Protect Rock Chips: There’s a rock or stones out there and their coming for you! If a stone suddenly strikes your pristine windshield, your going to keep the damage as clean as possible. Cover up all the damages with something like clear scotch tape asap. Surprisingly that will protect the damage from dirt and chemicals. The cleaner your damages are the clearer they will look after the repair process.
